CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

One o’clock in the morning was entirely too late to be out partying at my age, but the guys began recounting stories about my mishaps while working as a volunteer firefighter. My guys had been too entertained to discover my less than stellar moments to be enticed away.

After about the thirtieth instance of plopping my forehead on the table and groaning, Nolan took pity and put me out of my misery. It’d been so chivalrous of him, picking up on my dramatic nonverbal cues only after hours of embarrassing stories.

That was why he whined like a kicked puppy at the moment. Of course, I was also sure alcohol had something to do with his goofy demeanor.

“Come on, querida.”

“No.”

“Por favor, please.”

“I’m going to sleep. Ask me later when you’re less tipsy.”

His thick black brows pulled into a frown. “I am not that tipsy. My balance is excellent. See?”

With windmilling arms, he demonstrated his spectacular balance. It’d be doubly impressive if he didn’t wobble from side to side like a… well, like a drunken sailor.

Too bad he lacked the excuse of being on the unstable ocean to explain his stumbling.

“Come on, get in,” I cajoled, patting the large nest of blankets set out in the middle of the living room floor. The mattresses needed a good cleaning, but I’d washed the linens and comforters throughout the day. Vacuuming the carpet and shoving the heavy coffee table aside, especially with two strapping men for muscle, sounded easier than scrubbing down the bed and waiting on the fan to dry it.

Of course, that was prior to discovering that Nolan morphed into a hyper, happy drunk. Getting him into the blankets felt like wrangling a two-year-old burning his way through a grandma induced sugar rush.

Another pitiful whine sounded from the door.

“And you,” I started, getting fed up with all the males present. “Flint’s gone, so your whining isn’t doing anything but annoying me. Stop.”

Terry gave me the saddest expression on the planet before turning away and scratching his tiny paw at the wood again.

I pinched the bridge of my nose.

Flint attempted to stay the night as well, but I sensed he would be a packaged deal when Brien and Rory perked up in their own subtle ways as they tuned into my reply.

The thought of all of them… just no.

Hands on my hips, I glared at the couch where Eli flopped down after he’d manhandled the solid pine coffee table—because if I was being honest, I doubted Nolan had done much to help in his distractible state. “Can’t you do something?”

Eli grinned as those damnable dimples popped out to battle my justified ire, stuffing his hands in his hoodie. “But it’s so entertaining to watch.”

“Eli.”

“Alright, alright. I’ll call Flint about Terry—”

“No!” I shouted, wincing at the volume. “I mean, maybe you could help me with Nolan. Terry will settle when we do.”

“You want me to help you with your boyfriend?”

Nolan giggled. “He called me your boyfriend.”

Eli tilted his head. “Why is that funny, pal?”

“Because we’re just dating.
